About Defence Education, Learning, and Training Authority (DELTA)

The Defence Education, Learning, and Training Authority (DELTA) enables Defence Learning to provide a capable, agile, and integrated force. DELTA is an essential organisation providing advice, services, support, governance, and accreditation to all the Services – Navy, Army, Air Force, and the Australian Public Service. As a growing organisation within the Defence Education and Training Domain, DELTA joins other well-established visual identities, such as the Australian Defence Force Academy and the Australian Defence College.

Project brief

Through a tender process, Oppida was chosen to design, develop, refine and publish two existing and two new courses as part of an open tender process. These courses aimed to develop further and upskill training specialists within the Defence Learning Environment. They were designed for use on ADELE (U), the Defence-branded iteration of Moodle.

Project challenge

Oppida's challenge was transforming compliance and accreditation content into highly engaging courses that acted as a just-in-time resource for users to refer back to when facing challenging compliance scenarios. In addition, it was essential to design courses that enabled users to connect the compliance and accreditation training with their day-to-day duties to appreciate core compliance activities' role in ensuring quality training for Defence Force personnel.

Oppida’s customised solution

Central to Oppida's design process is understanding the learners. We pride ourselves on creating authentic and personalised learning experiences. To begin with, we liaised with DELTA staff to create four fictional personas. Each persona represented either a Defence Force rank or position. Digital avatars were also made for each persona. These personas were essential to weaving authentic scenarios and case studies throughout the training. This put faces to the courses, and the digital avatars were animated in the training videos.

The course content was presented across multiple mediums – video to text, template downloads and interactive H5P quizzes. The narrative and constructive alignment of the content were supported by clear calls-to-action that also involved the implementation of custom HTML code in the learning management system (Moodle).

The modular design of the courses allowed for clear signposting at every step of the learning experience. These signposts benefit users wishing to return to the training when needed. Ultimately, these design elements ensure learners gain knowledge of the principles and procedures that drive compliance and accreditation, witness them in action, apply them to their work role, and come away with the tools and confidence needed to ensure the Defence Force can continue to deliver high-quality training in the future.
